Explosion in online dating
The internet has been a godsend for communication and knowledge. Another arena that has been enhanced by the web, and its acceleration has been a relatively fresher development, is social networking. On a more upbeat channel than the recent financial news, if quite possibly lightweight topic, is the increase of couples and indeed marriages whose introduction has been online. In the United States there is even a site, eHarmony, that claim a specific percentage of recent marriages has been the result of their site.
eHarmony.com and similar sites such as Parship use a psychological matching mechanism to find couples whose personality are more likely to match. Sites of this nature require a subscription, though clearly if you are lucky and find love then it is surely worth it. There are free dating sites around, and whilst less sophisticated than profile matching sites, they are often very useable and contain the majority of tools. There are of course likely to be many more members to free sites, although many may not be serious daters.
So with this increased access to a community of like minded individuals, there has been growth in niche sites – where people who have the same interests or same needs. In the dating world similarly, there has been a raise in what is generally known as adult dating sites. Whether this has helped relationships or marriages is another question indeed!
